MOSAICS

I made mosaics from 1977 to 1999. They ranged from small pieces for private indoor use to large interior and exterior public works, including architectural decorations and playground sculptures.
In the public projects I made site-specific works, within the requirements of time schedules, budgets, and safety codes. I developed methods of fabrication that allowed me to build large works in sections off site, to be assembled on site for quick installation.
My inspiration was the mosaic work of Antoni Gaudí and his use of broken ceramic tiles. Like Gaudí, I did not make the tiles myself but got them from diverse commercial sources. Sometimes I used the tiles in their manufactured shapes, but mostly I cut and shaped them, and with the cut pieces improvised surface movements and rhythms of color, shape, and size.
In this section I show my mosaic works and, where applicable, include information on their design, fabrication, and installation.
