STEEL AND GLASS TABLE WITH MOSAIC 1999
Steel and glass table: 19" x 31" x 18 ½" high Mosaic: 16 ½" x 28 ½"
I wanted to make a small table featuring a mosaic, but I didn’t want to have the image obscured by magazines and other objects piled onto the table. Thus this solution: the glass top holds the stuff and the mosaic is visible whole, though through the metal lines of the surrounding enclosure.
The mosaic is of abstract shapes, suggesting fauna seen under a microscope, i.e., under glass, and may be viewed from any direction. The metal lines echo the shapes in the mosaic.
My friend Pete Engelhart, who makes wonderful metal percussion instruments, made the intricate metal frame from my designs. Each side of the grillwork is different.
