ARCHITECT 1979
Architect 36" x 36"
I made this small mosaic for an architect friend in Berkeley who had looked over our designs and the plans we drew up for our new Mendocino house.
The face is close to being a portrait, though I made his glasses frame red to echo the compass he holds over a representation of “plans”. I used unusually patterned blue tiles to make a stepped pyramid to hold the head and from which the hands emerge. Only the face, hands, and compass are made of completely cut tile pieces; for the rest of the mosaic I used the given shapes of various tiles, square except for the penny-rounds, cut only where needed to fit the surrounding sections. This piece is a serene portrait in an abstract design, using as before the circle in the square.
